Shildon Steam Gala Prelude

One of the highlights each year in the calendar at Locomotion is the annual Shildon Steam Gala.

This year’s gala is a bit of a celebration – not only of the 6th anniversary of opening and recent millionth visitor, but also the 75th anniversary of the Gresley A4 – so we have a bit of a Gresley theme this year. It’s also a year since I started blogging our activities!

The main stars are V2 “Green Arrow” and A4 “Mallard” which will be on static display with cabs open for visiting and supported by the following in steam:

Furness 20 and J72 tank loco 69023, plus visiting N2 class 1744 and D49 “Morayshire”. All are now on site at Shildon except “Morayshire” which is on the way, though its tender arrived this morning. This plus the usual trade stands, traction engines and other attrctions, and it’s all free 10:00 – 17:00 on Saturday and Sunday, though there is a small charge for train rides on which the N2, FR 20 and J72 will take turns.

There’s also a Friday evening photo session from 17:30 to 19:30, bookable by calling the museum on 01388 777999.

We did a gauging run with the N2 out of steam today to see if it would fit – and it does! Here it is by the Black Boy stables whilst we shut the level crossing gates behind us!
